Russian strikes on Saturday forced the closure of Ukraine's largest steelmaker, halting production and tightening supplies to regional and global steel markets.
The shutdown came on day 1,676 of the conflict, officials said, and removes one of Ukraine's main sources of finished steel and slab exports.
Largest mill halted
Officials said the plant stopped operations after direct hits to industrial infrastructure and support facilities. The company suspended work for safety and damage assessment, the officials added.
If the outage persists, officials warned buyers will draw more heavily on inventories and scrap metal, which could lift regional steel prices and prompt buyers to seek alternative suppliers. That process would lengthen delivery times for manufacturers dependent on Ukrainian shipments.
The closure also tightens the supply chain for semi-finished steels used in construction and machinery, officials said, increasing logistical pressure on ports and inland transport corridors that move metal to export customers.
Markets will watch whether the mill restarts by October 3, 2026; officials said damage assessments are expected within days and will determine a timeline for any resumption of output.
