The Performance AWD (w/Launch Package) is scheduled for release in spring 2026, while the more affordable base model will follow at a later, unspecified date. This pricing strategy aligns with Rivian's previously stated target of a $45,000 entry price for the R2, a figure first mentioned two years prior. The R2 is positioned to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y.
Validation prototypes of the R2 began production in Illinois in mid-January 2026, with subsequent validation testing and public road sightings occurring in February 2026.
