Apple Inc. has introduced the MacBook Neo, an aggressively priced $600 laptop, significantly impacting the budget laptop market. The device's launch on March 13, 2026, has reportedly surprised major PC manufacturers, despite some prior knowledge of its development. Asus CFO Nick Wu stated on an earnings call that the Neo's pricing was "certainly a shock to the entire market," acknowledging that Asus had been aware of Apple's plans since 2025.
The MacBook Neo's entry into the affordable segment, leveraging Apple's manufacturing capabilities and integrated tech stack, positions it as a direct competitor to mainstream Windows laptops and Chromebooks. Despite its 8GB RAM limitation, which Wu characterized as suitable for "content consumption" akin to a tablet, the device is seen as a formidable challenge to the existing PC market structure.
This development indicates a strategic shift by Apple into a broader consumer base, intensifying competition for traditional PC makers.
