Two countries, Pakistan and Türkiye, agreed on October 6, 2026 to deploy forces and capabilities to Saudi Arabia, officials said, to counter Houthi threats to regional shipping.
Deployments to protect Red Sea routes
Officials gave no immediate figure for personnel or assets and did not specify timelines, the statement said. The announcement follows recent attacks on commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb, which have led to increased naval escorts for merchant traffic, officials said.
The declared aim is to deter further attacks on transit corridors that link Asian and European markets and that carry energy cargoes. If forces and capabilities move into Saudi-based operations, shippers could face changed escort patterns and insurance assessments, which in turn can slow transits and raise freight costs.
The principal risk is that expanded foreign military presences near contested waters will heighten the chance of clashes or miscalculation. That could complicate Saudi security planning and require coordination among navies operating in the same sea lanes, officials added.
If deployments proceed, market participants and shipping operators should monitor official statements and any notices of force movements by October 10, 2026.
