Romania Appoints Fourth Prime Ministerial Candidate Amid Political Stalemate

President Nicușor Dan has designated diplomat Luca Niculescu as prime minister, marking the fourth attempt to form a government in five months. The nominee must secure a parliamentary majority within 10 days to confirm his cabinet and governing program. Failure to do so increases the probability of snap elections.

The ongoing political deadlock has created significant institutional instability, impacting national budget planning and fiscal policy. Prolonged uncertainty is currently exerting downward pressure on exchange rates and discouraging foreign investment.

The presidency remains resistant to dissolving parliament, citing concerns that a snap election could empower far-right, euroskeptic factions currently leading in opinion polls. The administration maintains that any new government must adhere to established pro-Western foreign policy and fiscal commitments.

Niculescu, previously responsible for Romania’s OECD accession process, has been granted discretion to form either a political or technocratic cabinet. His immediate objective is to consolidate a parliamentary coalition capable of stabilizing the executive branch.
