NFL Teams Address Quarterback Needs

The Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons have acquired veteran quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa, respectively, following the initial period of NFL free agency. These moves introduce competition for their 2024 draft picks, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr., who both experienced challenging 2025 seasons marked by injuries and performance issues. J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings' 10th overall pick, had a difficult first NFL season, missing his rookie year due to a knee injury and then throwing 12 interceptions and taking 27 sacks in 10 starts in 2025. Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons' eighth overall pick, started the 2025 season but missed the final eight games with a torn ACL. Murray and Tagovailoa, while significant acquisitions, also arrive with recent injury and performance concerns; Murray missed 12 games in 2025, and Tagovailoa was benched for performance reasons.

The Vikings are reportedly not ready to abandon McCarthy, hoping Murray's presence will positively influence his development. The Falcons view Penix as their future starter once healthy, with Tagovailoa providing depth. Both Murray and Tagovailoa were released by their previous teams, the Cardinals and Dolphins, who collectively paid them $90.8 million in guaranteed money not to play for them, indicating their own performance and injury risks.
