Nebraska Democrat Steps Aside for Independent

Cindy Burbank, the winner of Nebraska's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, announced her intention to withdraw from the general election to support independent candidate Dan Osborn. This decision, made public on Tuesday, May 14, aims to consolidate opposition against Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts in the November election.

Burbank secured the Democratic nomination despite previously stating her plan to step aside if victorious. Her primary opponent, William Forbes, was characterized by Democrats as a Republican plant. The Nebraska Democratic Party had endorsed Burbank for the primary but has publicly backed Osborn for the general election, viewing him as the strongest contender against Ricketts.

The strategic move by Burbank is designed to create a direct contest between Osborn and Ricketts, potentially increasing candidate's chances in a state that typically favors Republicans. This development occurs as Democrats also focus on Nebraska's Second Congressional District, a competitive area rated as leaning Democratic by the Cook Political Report, where State Senator John Cavanaugh is in a close race.
