Marotta deepens submarine role with three-year Electric Boat deal

Marotta Controls won an approximately three-year, multi-million-dollar contract from General Dynamics Electric Boat on Oct. 13, according to a company press release, expanding work tied to the Virginia-class submarine program.

The award adds to Marotta’s defense manufacturing pipeline and extends a naval business the company traces to 1943, including support for every U.S. submarine class since the USS Nautilus.

Marotta said Electric Boat selected the company to design, build and test Air Reducing Manifolds and Flow Control Valves. The components sit within submarine flow-control systems, which regulate movement of air or fluid through a platform’s equipment.

“This win represents our continued presence in a strategically important submarine program leading the Navy’s operations,” Bryan Begane, vice president for naval systems at Marotta Controls, said in the company press release.

The contract includes integrated design work and advanced manufacturing, Marotta said. The company said it will also use additive manufacturing, a form of industrial 3D printing, to support the system’s performance, reliability and schedule requirements.

“This program provides an opportunity to apply that expertise to systems specifically designed for Electric Boat’s Virginia-class requirements,” Begane said.

The company said the award builds on prior work connected to both the Virginia and Columbia class submarine programs. It said earlier development of complex manifolds for those platforms gave it a technical base for additional Virginia-class applications.

The announcement, issued by Marotta and distributed by GlobeNewswire, did not disclose the contract’s exact dollar value, unit volumes, delivery schedule, margin impact or production locations. It also did not include a statement from General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Marotta describes itself as a fully integrated aerospace and defense supplier based in New Jersey. Its product areas include pressure, power, motion, fluid and electronic controls for tactical systems, shipboard and sub-sea applications, satellites, launch vehicles and aircraft systems.

The company said it has more than 200 patents and in-house design, manufacturing and test capabilities. Those capabilities are relevant to this award because Marotta said the contract requires both engineering and production work, rather than component supply alone.

Marotta also described itself in the release as a family-owned small business. That status places the award within a supplier base that includes privately held specialist manufacturers as well as larger defense contractors, though the release gave no revenue figures.

The next disclosed step is execution of the approximately three-year contract, under which Marotta said it will deliver design, manufacturing and testing work for Electric Boat’s Virginia-class submarine requirements.
