Malaysia to Seek ASEAN Policy Reform on Transboundary Haze

Malaysia will formally propose the inclusion of transboundary haze within the ASEAN disaster management framework during the upcoming foreign ministers' meeting in Manila. Current regional protocols exclude haze from the classification of natural disasters, limiting the scope of collective intervention and resource mobilization.

Regional authorities report that severe wildfires in Indonesia have reached an 11-year peak, significantly impacting public health and economic activity in neighboring states. Poor visibility has constrained aerial firefighting operations, complicating containment efforts in affected provinces.

While Malaysia acknowledges the logistical challenges faced by Indonesia, it is pushing for more robust regional cooperation to mitigate cross-border environmental impacts. Domestic legal experts in Malaysia have noted that any proposed legislation regarding transboundary haze must address complex jurisdictional issues, including evidence collection and international enforceability.
