J&K Police opens FIR against Army officer's wife under secrecy law

Jammu and Kashmir Police registered FIR No. 290/2026 against an Army officer’s wife under India’s Official Secrets Act, The Economic Times reported on Oct. 18, citing sources and an official.

The case places a civilian family member of a serving major-rank officer under scrutiny over alleged handling of sensitive information, with the newspaper reporting two Official Secrets Act sections in the filing.

The FIR was registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station under sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to the report.

The Economic Times reported that police booked the woman for allegedly collecting and sharing sensitive information with foreign intelligence operatives, including people described by sources as linked to China. The report said she is a Telangana resident living within the Gandhi Nagar police station jurisdiction.

The newspaper said sources described the contact as connected to research-related activities now under examination. It also reported that the accused may have engaged unknowingly with people she believed were academics rather than intelligence operatives.

“Degree of information exchanged is being investigated,” an official told The Economic Times. The article said the accused had not been arrested so far.

The Official Secrets Act is India’s colonial-era secrecy law used in cases involving alleged disclosure or handling of protected state information. The report did not identify the woman, the Army officer, the nature of the material allegedly shared, or any charges filed beyond the FIR registration.
