Under the terms of the deal, the Jets will absorb $7 million of Fields' guaranteed $10 million salary for 2026. Fields' tenure with the Jets, which began in March 2025 with a two-year, $40 million contract, saw him benched during the 2025 season after an initial strong performance in Week 1, followed by a decline and a season-ending knee injury.
The trade provides the Chiefs with an alternative at quarterback, particularly as Mahomes faces an uncertain recovery timeline from a significant knee injury sustained on December 15. Kansas City's previous backup options, including Gardner Minshew and Chris Oladokun, proved unreliable during the 2025 season. Fields, despite a 16-37 career record as a starter, offers the Chiefs a low-risk option with potential upside within their offensive scheme.
