It Takes Two bug opens free-copy workaround on Switch 2

EA and Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two has a Nintendo Switch 2 workaround that can grant a free copy through version 1.0.4, ComicBook said in a report on Oct. 18.

The stake is larger than a small upgrade glitch: ComicBook said lifetime sales exceed 30 million copies, putting the co-op game among the top 40 sellers, after a 2021 Game of the Year win.

The workaround, first flagged by the X account Wario64 and described by ComicBook, depends on access to a physical Nintendo Switch copy, such as a borrowed, library or rental cartridge. Users then trigger the online-play and eShop upgrade flow, including error code 401-2710, rather than using the intended upgrade path.

ComicBook reported that the Switch 2 release includes a free upgrade for players who already own the Nintendo Switch version. The outlet said the current upgrade process is not functioning as intended and that the workaround is the only route working for now.

The developer is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, according to ComicBook. No timing was given, and the report did not include a comment from Nintendo, EA or Hazelight beyond that description.

It Takes Two is a two-player action-adventure game with platforming elements. Hazelight previously made A Way Out and later released Split Fiction; director Josef Fares also directed Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons before founding the studio.

ComicBook said It Takes Two carries an 89 Metacritic score and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2021. The free-copy workaround may stop once the upgrade flow is patched.
