India's $315-billion IT sector faces AI pressure

India's $315-billion IT sector is undergoing a structural shift as generative AI boosts productivity while exerting pressure on pricing, revenue and entry-level hiring, industry data showed. Clients are demanding more output for less and reallocating budgets toward AI, cloud and in-house capabilities, squeezing legacy contract margins.

Client demand pressures pricing

Analysts said automated and AI-driven workflows are raising output per engineer, allowing buyers to push for lower unit prices and outcome-based contracts. Industry data showed that the reweighting of spend toward platform, cloud and in-house build reduces revenue tied to legacy application maintenance and time-and-materials projects.

Large exporters including TCS and HCLTech face two linked challenges: margin compression on existing contracts and a falling need for junior developers on standard tasks. Firms are responding with a mix of repricing, higher-value product offers and increased investment in reskilling, officials said, but the shift raises near-term pressure on entry-level hiring and campus recruitment.

Companies and investors will watch whether higher productivity translates into broader revenue growth or just lower billing rates. Monitor corporate quarterly results and hiring statements for signals on contract repricing, utilization and margin trends.

By December 31, 2026 companies will report fourth-quarter results and updated hiring plans that should clarify whether margins stabilise or continue to compress.
