U.S. Bank Stadium to replace roof section after August 2023 hail damage

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority said it will remove and replace a large portion of the roof at U.S. Bank Stadium after damage from an August 2023 hailstorm. Officials said hailstones as large as 2.5 inches compromised sections of the venue’s translucent roof material. The authority said the roof remains safe for public use while it coordinates logistics for the work.

The replacement is expected to focus on the translucent portion of the roof, which officials said makes up about 60% of the overall surface area. The authority described the project as a step to protect the stadium’s weatherproofing and preserve its indoor environment. No final construction timeline has been announced.

U.S. Bank Stadium opened in 2016 and is home to the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. The translucent roof is designed to bring natural light into the building, a central part of the venue’s game-day and event setup.

Insurance coverage and public funding expectations

Officials said existing insurance is expected to cover most of the project’s cost. They added that they do not anticipate a “substantial use of public funds” to complete the roof replacement.
