Google Cloud's Revenue Soars

Google Cloud Revenue Surges, Reshaping Alphabet's Business Profile Alphabet's cloud computing division, Google Cloud, reported significant revenue growth in the first quarter of 2026, indicating a shift in the company's core business identity. On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Google Cloud's revenue increased by 63% year-over-year, reaching $20 billion. This performance led to a 7% rise in Alphabet's shares in after-hours trading.

Google Cloud now accounts for 18% of Alphabet's total business, up from 13.6% in the first quarter of 2025 and 11.8% in the first quarter of 2024. The division's operating income tripled to $6.6 billion, with its operating margin expanding from 9.4% to 32.9% during the same period. This growth is primarily attributed to increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services, as highlighted by CEO Sundar Pichai.

While advertising remains a substantial revenue driver, generating $77 billion in the first three months of 2026 with a 16% year-over-year increase, Google Cloud's accelerated expansion suggests a diversification of Alphabet's revenue streams. The division's current backlog stands at $460 billion, reflecting sustained customer demand for its services, particularly those related to AI.

This trajectory indicates a potential rebalancing of Alphabet's business focus beyond its traditional search advertising dominance.
