Fox Sports said it projects about 150 million viewers will watch some portion of its English-language World Cup coverage in the United States, helped by updated audience measurement that better captures viewing outside the home.
The network paid $485 million for the English-language broadcast rights and has pointed to a noticeable ratings lift as measurement methods evolve. Fox said the projected World Cup reach is close to the roughly 170 million audience it typically draws across its NFL regular-season broadcasts.
Executives attributed much of the increase to changes in how audiences are counted, arguing that major events have long been underrepresented when fans watch together away from their living rooms.
Nielsen’s out-of-home measurement changes the picture
The ratings gains are tied to Nielsen’s expanded “out-of-home” metrics, which include viewership from venues such as bars, fan festivals and smaller watch parties. Those settings were often missed or only partially reflected in traditional home-based panels.
By adding those audiences into official tallies, the measurement system is intended to provide a fuller estimate of total reach for live sports, where communal viewing is common. Fox said the updated methodology has materially increased the reported size of its World Cup audience.
Advertising and rights impact could extend beyond the tournament
Fox framed the revised counts as significant for its broader sports business, because a larger verified audience can influence ad pricing and how inventory is packaged across the calendar. The network has compared the scale of a World Cup cycle to the reach it generates during the NFL season.
Industry-wide, more comprehensive out-of-home measurement could also affect how broadcasters and advertisers evaluate live sports, especially for events that drive public viewing. The next test will be whether similar gains hold as more major properties are measured under the same standards.
Fox is expected to continue highlighting total-audience reach metrics as it sells advertising and evaluates the long-term value of its most expensive rights deals.
