Former Congo President Joins Armed Coalition to Oust Government

Former President Joseph Kabila has joined the Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN), a new political-military coalition challenging the administration of President Felix Tshisekedi. The FRN replaces the existing alliance between the Alliance Fleuve Congo and the M23 rebel group, which currently maintains control over Goma in North Kivu province.

The coalition has formally accused the current government of tyranny and declared its intent to utilize force to achieve its objectives. This development marks the first time a former head of state has assumed a leadership role within the active rebellion, significantly escalating the political and security risks to the current administration.

The involvement of a former president complicates ongoing international mediation efforts led by the United States and Qatar. The alignment threatens to destabilize the region further, as the conflict continues to involve complex geopolitical tensions and competition for mineral resources. Domestic political opposition has urged the coalition to abandon armed struggle in favor of dialogue, citing the risk of prolonged instability.
