Formula 1 Secures Decade-Long Deal to Bring Grand Prix Racing to Rwanda
Formula 1 has signed a ten-year deal to host a Grand Prix in Rwanda, with a new FIA-standard circuit planned for the Bugesera region.

Formula 1 has finalized a 10-year agreement to host an annual Grand Prix in Rwanda, marking the sport's return to the African continent for the first time since 1993.
New FIA-Grade Circuit Under Construction in Bugesera
The event will be held on a new, purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, located near the Kigali International Airport. This project is managed by the Rwanda Development Board as part of a broader infrastructure and commercial development initiative. Specialized engineering firms are currently designing the circuit to meet FIA Grade 1 standards, ensuring it can serve as a multi-purpose venue for international events beyond the racing calendar.
Targeting Young African Motorsport Fans
This expansion targets a significant demographic shift, with Formula 1 reporting over 100 million fans across Africa, a high concentration of whom are under the age of 35. While the agreement is confirmed, specific race dates and construction milestones for the new circuit are pending. The initiative aligns with Rwanda's strategy to leverage major international sports events for economic and tourism development.
