Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi publicly called for improved performance from striker Dominic Solanke following the club's 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa. This loss extends Tottenham's Premier League winless streak, marking their worst start to a season since 2008-09 with just two points from five matches.
Solanke's Limited Impact Against Villa
Dominic Solanke, 29, led Tottenham's attack against Aston Villa but struggled to make an impact. He played 65 minutes, flanked by Omar Marmoush and Savio, as Villa defenders Victor Lindelof and Tyrone Mings effectively neutralized his threat. Solanke created few opportunities to stretch the opposition defense.
Manager Expresses Post-Match Frustration
De Zerbi expressed his frustration in the post-match press conference, stating, "We need more from him for sure." While affirming his support for Solanke, the manager highlighted concerns about the player's physical condition and confidence levels. "His physical condition is not good enough. Maybe he is not good enough in the confidence at this moment," De Zerbi added.
Fitness Concerns Hinder Pre-Season
Solanke's current form appears linked to his physical readiness. He endured an injury-disrupted 2025/26 season, leading to a stop-start pre-season. This cautious approach to his fitness has seemingly left him short of peak physical levels early in the current campaign, contributing to a reported 3/10 match rating against Villa.
International Break Offers Recovery Opportunity
With Richarlison currently out of the squad, Solanke remains Tottenham's primary out-and-out number nine. The upcoming extended international break presents a critical opportunity for the 29-year-old to intensify his training and regain full match fitness. His contribution will be crucial for Tottenham's attacking output starting in October as the team seeks its first Premier League win.
