Rwanda has finalized a 10-year agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with the inaugural event projected for 2030. The race will be held on a purpose-built circuit under development in the Bugesera district, near the capital, Kigali.
New Circuit to Drive Regional Development
This project is part of Rwanda's national infrastructure and tourism development strategy. The circuit construction is directly linked to the adjacent Bugesera International Airport, intended to facilitate regional economic growth and international logistics. This agreement marks the return of the Formula 1 championship to the African continent for the first time since 1993, aligning with the sport's objective to establish a presence on every inhabited continent.
Long-Term Investment in Sporting Hub Status
Institutional stakeholders emphasize that this partnership aims to drive long-term investment in local skills development and commercial expansion. The project follows Rwanda's recent efforts to position itself as a hub for major international sporting events, further solidifying its growing profile in global sports.
Project Completion and Event Readiness
The financial and operational success of the venture remains contingent upon the timely completion of the circuit and its supporting infrastructure. The first edition of the race is expected as early as 2030, depending on the construction timeline.
