European Lawmakers Push for Formal Probe Into FIFA Corruption Scandal

European lawmakers have initiated a formal inquiry into FIFA President Gianni Infantino following the unprecedented reversal of a red card suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.

The move, which occurred on July 8, 2026, follows a direct communication between U.S. President Donald Trump and Infantino regarding the disciplinary action taken during the World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The controversy centers on FIFA’s decision to waive the mandatory suspension for Balogun, marking the first time in modern tournament history that a red card did not result in a match ban. While FIFA maintains the decision was made by its independent disciplinary committee, European Parliament members, led by Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang, argue the reversal constitutes a perversion of justice influenced by political pressure.
