DoorDash buys Instacart for $17 billion to expand grocery reach

The all-stock acquisition unites two major delivery platforms to counter growing competition from Amazon and Walmart.

DoorDash buys Instacart for $17 billion to expand grocery reach

DoorDash agreed to acquire rival delivery service Instacart for $17 billion on Oct. 30, sending grocery delivery shares higher in New York trading.

The transaction combines DoorDash's dominant restaurant ordering network with Instacart's established grocery fulfillment partnerships across major supermarket chains. The tie-up creates an integrated logistics platform designed to counter expanding retail delivery programs from Amazon and Walmart.

Regulatory scrutiny looms over grocery delivery scale

The combined company will account for more than 50% of the third-party US grocery delivery market, up from Instacart's standalone 25% share. Company executives said the deal structure will generate substantial operational synergies through unified routing software, warehouse technology, and shared advertising platforms.

Delivery sector equities climbed across the board following the announcement, as investors priced in reduced customer acquisition expenses and lower promotional discounting. Equity analysts noted that consolidated fleets often yield higher order density per courier hour across dense metropolitan zones.

Federal antitrust regulators are scheduled to open a formal merger review ahead of the targeted transaction closing date in June 2027. Shareholders face an initial proxy vote on May 15, 2027, which will determine whether the grocery acquisition proceeds under the agreed equity terms.
