Ousted Turkish Opposition Leader Announces New Party

Former Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel announced plans to establish a new political party in Ankara on Tuesday, following his court-ordered removal from the main opposition bloc in May. The move aims to consolidate opposition forces against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after an appeals court reinstated former leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu to the CHP chairmanship.

The formation of the new entity is expected to trigger a significant realignment within the 600-seat Turkish parliament, where the CHP currently holds 135 seats. Ozel stated that the project will seek to absorb defecting legislators and municipal officials, positioning itself as the primary opposition force. This development follows a period of intense legal pressure on the CHP, including the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and the detention of hundreds of party members since late 2024.

Analysts suggest the fragmentation of the secularist opposition may inadvertently benefit the ruling AK Party by diluting the anti-government vote. While Ozel frames the initiative as a necessary step toward governance, political observers note that the success of the new party depends on its ability to mobilize a broad societal response to counter the current political arithmetic, which remains skewed in favor of the incumbent administration.
