Ben Affleck warns of taxpayer AI bailout risk after $587m sale

Ben Affleck warned on Oct. 20 that AI could expose U.S. taxpayers to a Big Tech bailout, trade publication The Playlist reported, after his reported $587 million Netflix sale.

The warning carries industry weight because The Playlist said Affleck founded InterPositive, an AI filmmaking company, in 2022 and sold it to Netflix earlier this year for a reported $587 million. That price is about 59% of $1 billion, according to Atlas360 calculations, for a company founded about four years earlier.

The outlet described Affleck as supportive of artificial intelligence in Hollywood while skeptical of the financial assumptions surrounding the broader AI boom. Its headline quoted the phrase “Too Big To Fail,” framing his concern as a risk that large technology companies could seek public support if AI investments disappoint.

The report places a Hollywood figure with direct AI-business exposure inside a wider debate over who benefits from the technology and who bears the cost if its commercial returns fall short. In entertainment, AI has become a business issue as well as a creative one, touching production tools, studio strategy and labour concerns.

The Playlist published the item in its News section on Oct. 20, with Rodrigo Perez named as author.
