IndyCar Returns to Europe with 2027 Barcelona Grand Prix Deal

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya finalized a multi-year deal to host an IndyCar Series round beginning in July 2027, marking the championship's first race outside North America since 2013. The agreement establishes Spain's inaugural IndyCar event as a full points-paying championship race for both drivers and manufacturers.

Negotiations led by the Generalitat de Catalunya and operating body Fira Circuit concluded after months of talks initiated in June. Regional authorities pursued the calendar slot to offset the financial impact of Formula 1's absence at Montmelo in 2027, which stems from a biennial rotation schedule that returns grand prix racing to Barcelona in 2028, 2030, and 2032.

Catalan driver Alex Palou served as a central figure in discussions to attract the American open-wheel series to his home region. Circuit organizers aim to build on commercial momentum following recent attendance figures at the track, including more than 55,500 spectators recorded at the 6 Hours of Barcelona endurance round.
