Government Takes Direct Control of Avanti West Coast After Contract Ends

The government will transition Avanti West Coast to public ownership effective March 7, 2026, upon the expiration of its current operating contract. This decision follows sustained operational underperformance, characterized by high rates of cancellations and delays on the London-to-Glasgow corridor.

This transition aligns with the broader government strategy to consolidate passenger rail services under the oversight of Great British Railways by 2027. The move reflects a shift in policy toward direct state control as existing private franchises conclude their terms.
