U.S. Prepares for 250th Anniversary

The United States is preparing to commemorate its 250th anniversary of independence in 2026 with a series of nationwide events, including a mixed martial arts fight on the White House lawn. This semiquincentennial celebration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, involves various activities across the country, some of which have generated controversy.

President Donald Trump has promised a notable celebration, with events such as the UFC Freedom 250 fight on the White House lawn on June 14, the Great American State Fair on Mall from June 25 to July 10, and the Freedom 250 Grand Prix featuring IndyCars racing around capital monuments from August 22 to 23. Other planned activities include a World Cup Fan Zone in Washington, D.C., fireworks at Mount Rushmore, and mobile museums known as Freedom Trucks traveling nationwide.

The UFC Freedom 250 event has drawn scrutiny due to its timing on Flag Day and President Trump's 80th birthday, and its staging by Dana White, CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and a prominent political donor. Despite the event's title, a spokesperson for the government-backed Freedom 250 task force clarified that the presidential group is not responsible for the operations, logistics, or funding of the UFC White House event. A federal judge recently rejected a petition to halt the fight, which raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest given Trump's stock holdings in UFC's parent company.
