White House Announces Proposed $200 Billion South Korean Energy Investment Package

The White House has announced a proposed $200 billion energy investment package involving South Korean capital. The initiative includes $120 billion for the construction of eight nuclear power plants, $54 billion for an Alaska-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, and $22.3 billion for natural gas power facilities in Texas.

While the administration characterizes these figures as a finalized agreement, official documentation from the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy indicates that the projects remain subject to commercial feasibility studies and domestic regulatory approval. Specifically, the Alaska LNG project is currently under preliminary review, with no formal commitment to the investment scale or participation confirmed by the South Korean government.

This announcement marks the first official briefing by the new White House Press Secretary. The administration is framing these energy investments as a fulfillment of presidential campaign promises regarding economic and energy policy. Discrepancies between the administration's public statements and the status of bilateral agreements may introduce uncertainty regarding the timeline and viability of these infrastructure projects.
