The San Francisco 49ers opened their training camp in Santa Clara with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk remaining on the reserve/left team list, as confirmed by General Manager John Lynch on Saturday. This designation has kept Aiyuk off the 90-man roster since December and requires the player to petition the NFL for reinstatement before any potential trade or release can occur.
Aiyuk's Public Stance and Team Focus
Aiyuk has publicly expressed his desire to leave the organization, indicating a preference to join the Washington Commanders. Despite his social media activity and claims of relocating to Virginia, no formal trade negotiations have advanced. Lynch chose not to elaborate on his recent interactions with Aiyuk, reiterating the organization's focus on its active roster.
Key Players on Physically Unable to Perform List
In addition to Aiyuk's absence, the team announced that four players, including tight end George Kittle, will start camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Kittle is recovering from an Achilles injury sustained in January and is targeting a return for the September 10 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
Other Injury Delays for Defenders
Defensive tackle Alfred Collins, defensive end Mykel Williams, and running back Isaac Guerendo also face delayed starts to training camp due to various injuries. Lynch noted that Collins might return to practice as soon as next week, suggesting a quicker recovery timeframe for the defensive tackle.
