WTA Finals Moves to California, Ends Saudi Hosting Deal Early

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will hold its season-ending Finals at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California for the 2026 tournament. This decision concludes the organization's three-year hosting arrangement in Riyadh one year ahead of its original schedule, following mutual agreement between the WTA and the Saudi Tennis Federation.

During its two years in Riyadh, the event saw record-breaking prize money distributions, including the largest payout in women's sports history, and reported increased local attendance. Despite the early departure of the WTA Finals, Saudi Arabia continues to expand its sports influence, planning to host a new ATP Masters 1000 tournament by 2028.

Tournament's Volatile History

This relocation highlights the tournament's recent instability, which has experienced multiple venue changes since a long-term agreement in China was canceled. The move to California aims to provide immediate operational stability for the flagship tennis event.

Saudi Sports Expansion Continues

While the WTA Finals is leaving Saudi Arabia, the kingdom's broader involvement in professional sports, particularly men's tennis, continues to grow. The Saudi Tennis Federation and the WTA have emphasized the partnership's contribution to community programs, reaching over 30,000 individuals through coaching workshops, physical education teacher training, and tennis clinics for breast cancer survivors.

The collaboration also aimed to inspire future generations of players and fans, with the event noting a 20% year-on-year growth in attendance.

The WTA Finals had previously faced disruptions, including the termination of a 10-year contract in Shenzhen, China, starting in 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns surrounding Chinese player Peng Shuai. Between 2021 and 2023, the tournament cycled through host cities such as Guadalajara, Fort Worth, and Cancún before its brief tenure in Riyadh.

The upcoming tournament in California will feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams, taking place from November 8 to 15.
