General Motors Launches Formula 1 Engine Facility This December
General Motors opens its North Carolina engine factory this December, though future regulatory shifts threaten the long-term viability of its V8 engines.

General Motors will inaugurate its dedicated Formula 1 power unit manufacturing facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, on December 18. The site is intended to support the company’s entry as an official power unit supplier beginning in the 2029 season.
This development occurs amid regulatory uncertainty regarding future engine specifications. The governing body has signaled a potential transition to V8 engines by 2031, which would significantly truncate the operational lifespan of the powertrain currently under development by the manufacturer.
Cadillac’s current Formula 1 entry is experiencing performance challenges, remaining the only team without a championship point in the 2026 season. The organization is currently utilizing customer Ferrari power units while attempting to scale its internal engineering and technical infrastructure to improve competitive standing.
