Trump's comments occurred on the same day the U.S. announced new sanctions against Cuba. These sanctions target individuals within the Cuban government and threaten foreign banks conducting business with the island nation. The U.S. administration has accused Cuba of supporting Maduro's alleged drug-trafficking operations by providing security personnel in exchange for oil and money, which were subsequently cut off after the January operation in Venezuela.
