FIFA Greenlights Tailgating for Gillette World Cup

FIFA has reversed an earlier policy and will allow tailgating at World Cup matches played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, according to the Boston World Cup host committee on Monday, April 28, 2026.

The host committee said the change brings FIFA’s approach in line with local rules that already permit tailgating for other events at the venue. It also said there are no venue or public safety restrictions that would prevent the activity.

Host committee cites alignment with local rules

The earlier plan would have barred tailgating across all 104 matches of the 2026 tournament, including the 78 games scheduled to be played in the United States. Officials said that stance drew widespread frustration from football fans.

Under the updated approach, tailgating will be permitted at the Foxborough site, but the host committee said the footprint for pregame gatherings will be much smaller than what fans typically see on NFL game days.

Boston Stadium branding and match schedule

For the World Cup, Gillette Stadium will be temporarily renamed Boston Stadium under FIFA’s corporate sponsorship policy. The venue is set to stage seven matches during the tournament.

Those seven games include five group-stage matches, one round-of-32 match, and a quarterfinal, the host committee said.

Parking capacity cut and higher transport prices

Officials said about 5,000 public parking spaces will be available for World Cup events at the stadium. That compares with roughly 20,000 public parking spaces typically available for New England Patriots games.

Transportation is also expected to cost more for fans traveling from Boston to Foxborough. Round-trip train tickets are set at $80, which officials said is four times the standard rate charged for NFL and MLS games.

For those choosing buses, express service options are priced at $95, according to the host committee.

What remains unclear for fans

While the policy reversal restores a familiar part of the game-day experience, the host committee’s announcement did not detail how tailgating areas will be managed within the reduced space. It also did not specify how parking access will be distributed among ticket holders and other attendees.

FIFA’s updated position applies to World Cup matches at the Foxborough venue as described by local organizers, and further operational details may be released closer to the tournament.
