Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, generated a record $17.7 million in group licensing revenue during his first NFL season, the NFL Players Association’s annual report shows. The total, tracked from May 2025 through February 2026, eclipses the previous single-season high of $9.5 million set by Tom Brady.
Payments were directed to Sanders’ business entity, SS2 Legendary LLC. The surge reflects demand for his jerseys, trading cards and other officially licensed products tied to his rise from college to the pros.
The union’s report details 13 separate distributions to SS2 Legendary LLC over the period. The largest single transfer, $9.2 million, arrived a few days after the 2025 NFL Draft, aligning with the traditional spike in consumer interest that follows draft night. The performance also underscores how NFLPA royalties can rival or exceed early-career on-field earnings for high-profile rookies, with Sanders’ take surpassing the approximate value of his four-year rookie contract of about $4.6 million.
Sanders’ switch from jersey No. 12 to No. 2 created an additional merchandising catalyst. Number changes often prompt fans to refresh apparel, adding a secondary wave of sales on top of the draft-driven rush. While group licensing covers pooled use of names, numbers and likenesses across approved products, it does not include all of a player’s separate, individually negotiated endorsements.
The $17.7 million figure represents a new benchmark for any single season tracked by the NFLPA. It highlights the commercial pull Sanders carried into the league and the scale of today’s licensed merchandise ecosystem, where breakout rookies can convert visibility into outsized royalty streams.
Record-breaking royalties and timing
Draft buzz and number change fueled sales
According to the annual report, SS2 Legendary LLC received 13 payments between May 2025 and February 2026, led by a $9.2 million distribution soon after the 2025 NFL Draft. That cadence mirrors common retail patterns for officially licensed gear following draft night. Sanders’ in-season jersey switch to No. 2 created an additional inflection point that encouraged fans to update earlier purchases.
On-field trajectory and Browns depth chart
Rookie-year production and QB competition
Sanders’ commercial breakthrough contrasted with a more uneven debut on the field. He completed 57% of his passes for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions over seven starts, added 169 rushing yards and one touchdown, and was sacked 23 times, finishing with a passer rating near the bottom of the league behind an offensive line that struggled.
The Browns head into the offseason with an open quarterback competition under first-year head coach Todd Monken, with Sanders vying alongside Deshaun Watson for the starting role. How the depth chart settles will shape Cleveland’s season and could further influence Sanders’ off-field momentum, which has already reset the NFLPA’s royalty records.
Training camp and preseason will clarify Cleveland’s quarterback picture and could spur another wave of licensed merchandise demand if Sanders secures the job or the team confirms his long-term jersey number.
