Seth Ryan returns to New York Jets staff as offensive assistant

Seth Ryan has joined the New York Jets this offseason as an offensive assistant, returning to a franchise he followed closely while growing up in New Jersey. Ryan said the opportunity carries personal meaning for him and his family, and described it as a long-term professional goal. The move also extends a multi-generation link between the Ryan family and the Jets’ football operation.

Ryan is the third generation of his family connected to the organization. His grandfather Buddy Ryan worked as the Jets’ defensive line coach during the Super Bowl III season, and his father Rex Ryan later served as head coach and led the club to two AFC Championship Game appearances.

Ryan played college football at Clemson and began his NFL coaching career with stints on the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions staffs. He also spent time around the Jets as a teenager during his father’s tenure, when he was regularly in the building during what remains the team’s most recent playoff era.

Ryan is joining head coach Aaron Glenn’s staff, and his exact day-to-day duties are expected to take clearer shape as the Jets progress through their offseason program and toward training camp.

Family connection and New Jersey roots

Ryan said he attended high school in Summit, New Jersey, and noted that his wife is also from the state. He pointed to those home-state ties when explaining why the move matters to his family and why returning to the Jets had been an objective as he built his coaching path.

He also recalled being on the field during the Jets’ AFC Championship seasons, describing the stadium atmosphere and fan energy as a standard he hopes the current staff can work toward. Ryan said his family reacted with excitement and sees the move as a chance to help the organization improve.

Offense-first path in a defense-known family

While the Ryan family is best known for defensive coaching, Seth Ryan has chosen an offensive track. The Jets are expected to deploy him as a support coach within the offensive group as staff work continues on preparation, installation and weekly planning.

The Jets will now turn to integrating the reworked staff ahead of camp, with Ryan’s role expected to become more defined as the offseason schedule advances.
