Saudi Arabia to End LIV Golf Funding

Saudi Arabia to End LIV Golf Funding Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) will cease its multi-billion dollar financial backing of LIV Golf at the conclusion of the current season, effective late 2026. This decision, reported on April 30, 2026, casts significant doubt on the future of the professional golf series, which has been seeking replacement investors.

LIV Golf announced a "strategic evolution" on Thursday, establishing an independent board led by Gene Davis and Jon Zinman to navigate this transition and secure new financial partners. The move follows reports that PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, a co-founder of LIV in 2021, may step down from the tour's existing board. The series, which has incurred net losses exceeding $1.1 billion since its inception, is actively seeking new investors and is described as "totally up for sale."

The PIF's withdrawal aligns with its new strategy focusing on more sustainable investments. LIV Golf has postponed its June event in New Orleans, resulting in no U.S. tournaments between May 10 and August 6. Despite this, events are scheduled in South Korea, Spain, and Britain during this period. While officials acknowledge a likely scaling back of the current 14-event schedule, LIV remains hopeful of maintaining an international team-based tour and is engaged in discussions with potential investors.
