Saudi Arabia draw 1-1 with Uruguay in World Cup Group H opener

Saudi Arabia drew 1-1 with Uruguay in their opening match of World Cup Group H at Miami Stadium on Monday, June 16, 2026. Abdulelah Alamri put the Green Falcons ahead before the break, but Maxi Araujo struck late to earn Uruguay a point.

The result left both teams on one point after the first round of fixtures. Earlier in the group, Spain and Cape Verde played out a 0-0 draw, leaving Group H level after its opening matches.

Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais played a central role in the outcome, producing a string of saves as Uruguay controlled long stretches of possession and spent much of the game in Saudi territory.

Uruguay began brightly, with Araujo testing Alowais early on and Federico Vinas later forcing another stop with a diving header. Despite sustained pressure, Uruguay struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear chances before half-time.

Saudi Arabia grew into the contest late in the first half and took the lead in the 41st minute. Mohamed Kanno’s header from a corner was saved by Fernando Muslera, but Alamri reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

Uruguay change approach after the break

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa made changes at half-time and his side looked more direct, with more delivery from wide areas and increased numbers arriving in the penalty area. The shift created a series of headed chances that again required Alowais to intervene.

Manuel Ugarte went close to equalising in the 60th minute when his driven effort beat Alowais but struck the post. Uruguay continued to press, with Vinas remaining their most consistent aerial threat.

The equaliser arrived 10 minutes from time. Vinas forced another save with a header, and Araujo collected the loose ball, controlled it and finished from close range to make it 1-1.

Uruguay pushed for a winner in a frantic closing spell. Federico Valverde and Jose Maria Gimenez both tested Alowais, who made further saves to preserve the draw.

Coaches describe the draw as an opportunity missed

Bielsa said Uruguay had not managed the first half well and viewed the match as one his side should have won. Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis said his team tired late on but welcomed the point against an opponent with a strong World Cup history.

Both sides now turn to their next Group H fixtures with qualification still wide open after the group’s first set of matches ended in two draws.
