Chiefs WR Rashee Rice set for June 16 jail release after 30-day term

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is scheduled to be released from jail on Tuesday, June 16, after completing a 30-day sentence tied to a probation violation stemming from a March 2024 street-racing case.

Rice was required to serve the jail time immediately after testing positive for THC, under the terms of his probation. He previously pleaded guilty to two felony counts related to the underlying incident.

The timing of the sentence meant Rice missed the Chiefs’ organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. His offseason work has also been limited by knee surgery he underwent shortly before his incarceration.

Rice had originally been sentenced to 30 days to be served at his discretion over a five-year probation period. The positive test triggered the requirement that the custodial time be served right away.

Temporary release approved for knee rehabilitation

A court order entered on May 28 allowed Rice to temporarily leave the facility to continue rehabilitation following his knee procedure, while keeping the 30-day term in place.

During his detention, Rice was moved from an isolated cell to the general population at his lawyer’s request, according to the report.

NFL discipline outlook and 2025 suspension

The league has shown no inclination to impose additional discipline specifically for the probation violation. Rice is already suspended for the first six games of the 2025 season as a result of his guilty plea in the underlying case.

Rice’s next steps will depend on his progress in knee rehabilitation and how quickly he is cleared to resume full football activities following his release.
