Taylor Heinicke, the quarterback who became a fan favorite during his stint with the Washington Commanders, has announced his retirement from the NFL.
Heinicke, 33, shared the news Thursday in an Instagram post, thanking those who supported him during a seven-year professional career in which he spent time with seven franchises and appeared in games for five.
He made his name in Washington asourceser joining the team’s practice squad in December 2020. A month later, he started a wild-card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, completing 26 of 44 passes for 306 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while also scoring a rushing touchdown.
That performance helped Heinicke earn a two-year contract worth $4.75 million. Over the next two seasons, he started 24 games for Washington, with the team going 12-11-1 in those starts.
Asourceser leaving Washington, Heinicke signed with the Atlanta Falcons and started four games. He later joined the Los Angeles Chargers, where he appeared in four games in 2024 and attempted five passes. He was released in August and did not sign with another team.
Overall, Heinicke started 29 NFL games and appeared in 42, throwing for 6,663 yards with 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.
