FIFA bans Qatar’s Assim Madibo five matches for serious foul play

FIFA has suspended Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for five matches after a tackle that broke Canada midfielder Ismael Kone’s tibia and fibula, officials said on Wednesday. Madibo was shown a straight red card for the challenge during Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday. FIFA’s disciplinary committee said the sanction was issued for serious foul play and is subject to appeal.

The ban means Madibo will miss the rest of Qatar’s 2026 World Cup campaign. FIFA said the suspension remains in force unless amended through the appeal process.

Kone was injured in the 51st minute when he was tackled from behind. He was taken off on a stretcher and later underwent surgery, with Canada’s first World Cup win in the tournament overshadowed by the severity of the injury.

The incident also prompted immediate reaction on the pitch, with players from both teams quickly recognising the seriousness of the injury. Madibo was visibly distressed after being sent off.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch said after the match that Madibo went to Kone’s dressing room to apologise in person.

Impact on Qatar’s World Cup squad

Qatar played again after the red card, losing 3-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina at Seattle Stadium on Wednesday. With the five-match ban extending beyond the remainder of Qatar’s group schedule, Madibo will not feature again in the tournament.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee said its ruling followed the standard process for red-card offences at major tournaments. Any appeal would be handled under FIFA procedures and timelines.

Officials said the two camps made contact after the match and that Madibo later visited Kone to check on him. Qatar’s sports minister joined a follow-up visit, according to the Qatar Football Association, which described the meeting as a gesture of sportsmanship and wished Kone a speedy recovery.

Kone was later pictured in a wheelchair while attending Canada matches during his recovery. FIFA disciplinary sanctions at World Cups can vary widely depending on the offence. In past tournaments, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez received a nine-match suspension for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in 2014, while Italy defender Mauro Tassotti was banned for eight games in 1994 for an elbow on Spain forward Luis Enrique.

Canada and Qatar continue their World Cup schedules in the coming days, while Kone’s rehabilitation continues and Madibo’s camp considers whether to appeal FIFA’s ruling.
