Princeton Football Drops Season Opener 21-14 to Bryant

Princeton University's football team (0–1 overall) fell 21–14 to Bryant University (3–1 overall) in its season opener. The Tigers moved the ball effectively downfield but failed to convert numerous red zone scoring opportunities and missed two field attempts, according to the team's assessment.

Offensive Promise, Red Zone Woes First-year quarterback Wyatt Becker, Princeton's first freshman starting quarterback since 2000, completed 15 of 29 passes for 202 yards. Becker threw one touchdown but also two interceptions. Despite his mobility and ability to extend plays, the team's inability to convert inside the 20-yard line proved costly. Becker acknowledged the team's effective drives, emphasizing the need to improve red zone scoring.

Early Lead, Defensive Stands Princeton's defense started strong, nearly forcing a fumble and an interception on Bryant's initial drive. Following a punt, senior running back Ethan Clark broke a 24-yard run, moving the Tigers into the red zone. Becker then connected with sophomore receiver Josh Smith for a touchdown, giving Princeton an early 7–0 lead. The defense continued to hold, allowing the offense to march downfield again, highlighted by a 32-yard contested catch from sophomore receiver Josh Robinson, a standout from the previous season.

Missed Kicks Shift Momentum

The Tigers' second red zone trip ended with a Bryant interception, shifting momentum and leading to a tying touchdown drive for the Bulldogs. Later, Princeton's drive stalled, resulting in a 46-yard field attempt by senior kicker Esteban Nunez Perez, which fell short. Head coach Bob Surace ’90 expressed surprise at the special teams' performance, noting its strength in camp. Another missed field, this time due to a botched snap, further hampered Princeton's scoring efforts, keeping the score tied at 7–7 at halftime.

Second Half Battle, Final Drive Bryant took a 14–7 lead in the second half before Princeton responded with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Clark, evening the score again. With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Princeton trailed 21–14 after an 11-yard Bryant rushing touchdown. The Tigers held two timeouts and possession, but an offensive holding penalty and an incompletion led to a third-and-long situation. Becker's subsequent deep pass was intercepted by Bryant, sealing the Bulldogs' victory.

Home Opener Against Albany

Princeton will now prepare for its home opener against Albany (2–2 overall) on September 26 at Powers Field. The upcoming game will feature former Tiger Kai Colón ’25, who now plays for Albany. The team aims to address its red zone efficiency and special teams performance ahead of the next contest.
