Portugal Strips Legal Protections From Football Leaks Whistleblower

Portuguese authorities have removed witness protection status from Rui Pinto, the individual responsible for the Football Leaks revelations. This decision means the cessation of police security for Pinto, who played a key role in supplying documents that led to Manchester City's recent conviction on 115 financial charges.

Pinto has voiced his intention to depart Portugal, citing an immediate threat to his life and numerous death threats he has reportedly received. His legal representatives have described the state's action as a breach of the rule of law.

Legal Process Concerns Raised

The whistleblower's counsel emphasized that the withdrawal of protection occurred without a formal hearing or any opportunity for an appeal. They have formally requested that the Ministry of Justice make public the risk assessment data that underpinned the termination of these security measures.

Pinto's legal team maintains that continuing international investigations, especially those involving powerful entities, necessitate ongoing state security for their client. They are currently preparing an appeal against the government's decision, aiming to address what they term a security vacuum.
