Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has committed an additional $500 million in private funding towards the Bank of America Stadium renovations, elevating the total project cost to $1.3 billion. This significant investment aims to modernize the 30-year-old Charlotte venue.
The upgrade intends to attract major international sporting events, including a bid for the 2031 Women's World Cup, the NFL draft, and potential Super Bowl hosting opportunities. The renovation project, slated for completion by 2030, encompasses a comprehensive exterior redesign, expanded social areas, and enhanced digital infrastructure.
A key aspect of the development includes a new 4,400-seat music venue. This addition seeks to transform the surrounding district into a year-round entertainment hub. Tepper Sports & Entertainment confirmed that the additional $500 million is entirely privately funded. The organization also stated it would assume responsibility for all maintenance and any potential cost overruns, reinforcing its commitment to the project without further public expenditure.
Stadium Enhancements and Expansion
The announcement coincides with a long-term extension of the stadium's naming rights agreement with Bank of America, underscoring a continued partnership. The renovations are specifically designed to accommodate both the NFL's Carolina Panthers and Major League Soccer's Charlotte FC.
The upgrades will also enhance the venue's capacity to host concerts and various community events throughout the year. The plans involve removing existing perimeter fencing and integrating park-style settings around the stadium.
This strategic move aims to evolve the facility from primarily a game-day-specific site into a multi-purpose destination for the wider region. Enhancements will include expanded indoor-outdoor gathering spaces, a social patio at the 500 level offering panoramic views of Uptown Charlotte, and larger, more dynamic scoreboards. Improved audio systems and upgraded seating, featuring personalized technology options, are also part of the modernization effort.
Vision for Year-Round Entertainment
The comprehensive overhaul of Bank of America Stadium is set to significantly alter its exterior, presenting a fresh, modern, and open-air aesthetic. A signature illuminated crown will be added to the stadium, contributing to the Charlotte skyline.
The removal of black metal gates around the stadium will create a more welcoming, park-like environment, promoting broader community access and engagement beyond scheduled events. Additionally, the project includes expanded retail, food and beverage options, increased restroom capacity, and flexible event spaces.
These improvements are designed to support game days while also facilitating community, corporate, and special events during the offseason, enhancing the stadium's utility as a comprehensive venue.
The integration of the new entertainment venue outside the north gate is central to the vision of creating a vibrant "Charlotte corridor." This venue is projected to host 80 to 100 concerts and events annually, alongside providing enhanced hospitality during NFL game days. This multifaceted approach aims to position Bank of America Stadium and its surrounding area as a prime weekend destination for world-class sports, entertainment, and cultural gatherings.
