Pakistan Targets 4% Growth and $1 Billion in Privatization Revenue

Pakistan projects economic growth exceeding 4% for the current fiscal year, supported by resilient agricultural output and stable fuel supplies. This growth target persists despite regional geopolitical instability and the country’s high sensitivity to energy import costs and external financing requirements.

The government plans to divest five to six state-owned entities this fiscal year, aiming to generate over US$1 billion in proceeds. These divestments are critical to demonstrating reform commitment under the existing US$7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Fund Facility.

Negotiations remain ongoing for a proposed US$10 billion exchange stabilization facility with the United States, intended to bolster foreign exchange reserves. While officials indicate this facility would provide significant liquidity, they maintain that current market access remains viable even if the agreement does not materialize.

Fiscal stability remains contingent on managing commodity-driven inflation and meeting IMF-mandated revenue targets. Continued reliance on external financing and the successful execution of state-asset privatization are essential to mitigating risks to public finances and maintaining institutional credibility.
