China’s Export Surge Triggers Growing Trade Imbalance Across Southeast Asia

China recorded a 36.3% year-on-year increase in exports last month, with shipments to Southeast Asia rising by 52.3%. This export growth coincides with a domestic economic slowdown characterized by stagnant retail sales and a 19.9% decline in property investment. trade surplus reached $133.5 billion for the month, bringing the year-to-date total to $938.1 billion.

Industrial production remains resilient at 5.2% growth despite weak domestic demand and a 7.2% contraction in fixed-asset investment. This divergence suggests that external markets are currently absorbing excess production capacity that the domestic economy cannot sustain.

These trade patterns present significant governance challenges for Southeast Asian nations regarding regional market stability. Policymakers face increased pressure to manage trade deficits while balancing the need for industrial integration with China. The reliance on external demand to sustain production levels raises concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of current trade dynamics.
