Diabetes Drugmaker Shatters Profit Estimates

Novo Nordisk Exceeds Profit Forecasts Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company, surpassed first-quarter profit forecasts and increased its full-year outlook on Wednesday, driven by stronger-than-expected sales of its new weight-loss pill. The company reported an adjusted operating profit of 32.86 billion Danish crowns ($5.16 billion) for the first quarter, exceeding the analyst forecast of 28.74 billion crowns.

The primary driver for this performance was the Wegovy pill, which generated 2.26 billion crowns in sales, significantly above the 1.16 billion crown analyst forecast. This strong performance led Novo Nordisk to adjust its full-year guidance, now expecting adjusted sales and operating profit to decline by 4% to 12% at constant exchange rates, an improvement from the previous range of 5% to 13% decline.

This positive development comes as Novo Nordisk intensifies its competition with U.S. rival Eli Lilly in the obesity drug market. The company's share price has experienced a decline of nearly 40% over the past 12 months, while Eli Lilly's stock has risen by approximately 18% in the same period. The launch of Eli Lilly's competing oral obesity drug, Foundayo, in early April has further heightened market competition.
