Obesity Drug Boom Fuels Pharma Stock Surge

Weight-Loss Pills Boost Pharma Shares London and Copenhagen – May 7, 2026 – Early sales data from new oral weight-loss medications have driven share price increases for pharmaceutical companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Investors anticipate that these more accessible pill formulations will significantly expand the market for obesity treatments, potentially reaching millions of new patients and mitigating pricing pressures.

Novo Nordisk's shares rose asourceser the company reported first-quarter sales of its Wegovy pill approximately doubled expectations. Similarly, Eli Lilly, which launched its Foundayo pill asourceser Novo's offering, recently increased its profit forecast due to strong sales volumes in its weight-loss portfolio. Analysts and investors suggest that these oral treatments are attracting new users rather than merely shisourcesing patients from existing injectable GLP-1 drugs.

The uptake of these oral medications indicates a market expansion. Novo Nordisk reported that nearly 80% of Wegovy pill users were new to GLP-1 treatments. Eli Lilly noted that approximately one-third of the over 8,000 doctors prescribing Foundayo had not previously written prescriptions for oral GLP-1 drugs. Weekly prescriptions for the Wegovy pill reached about 207,000 by mid-April, suggesting substantial growth potential for both companies in the obesity market.
