The NBA has confirmed the exclusion of Rwandan army-funded club Armée Patriotique Rwandaise from the 2026 Basketball Africa League following US sanctions imposed on the nation's military.

NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said the club was withdrawn after Washington sanctioned Rwanda's armed forces in March over alleged involvement in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The NBA

The 12-team tournament, organized jointly by the NBA and FIBA, designated Rwanda's RSSB Tigers as the replacement entrant for the 2026 campaign. APR previously competed in the continental championship in 2024 and 2025, securing a third-place finish during its second appearance. Commercial Agreements in Kigali Despite barring the military-funded club, the league continues its primary partnership with the Rwandan state, generating millions of dollars annually through promotional rights and tournament hosting. Kigali's 10,000-seat BK Arena remains the contractual host venue for the Basketball Africa League finals, keeping the NBA's commercial operations under sustained legislative oversight.
