Mississippi Valley State Upsets Prairie View A&M 28-27

Mississippi Valley State secured a 28-27 upset victory over Prairie View A&M, overcoming a 24-point first-half deficit. The win marks the Delta Devils' first of the 2026 season, surprising a Panthers squad that entered the game as a double-digit favorite.

Delta Devils Erase 24-Point Deficit

Mississippi Valley State quarterback Josh Brown engineered the comeback, completing 13 of 25 passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. Brown also proved instrumental in the ground game, scoring all three of the Delta Devils' rushing touchdowns and adding 101 rushing yards on 17 carries. The game-winning score materialized from a 35-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Brown, followed by Luka Sari's extra point with 2 minutes, 11 seconds remaining.

Prairie View's Second-Half Defensive Lapse

Prairie View A&M initially dominated, scoring 24 points in the first half. However, the team managed only 3 points in the second half as its defense failed to contain Brown. Defensive player Javieane Stevens recorded 7 total tackles, 0.5 sacks, and 4 quarterback hurries for Mississippi Valley State, including a crucial fourth-down sack on Panthers quarterback Trevin Carter.

Morgan State also delivered a notable upset, defeating Villanova 38-35. Quarterback Cameron Edge led the Bears, throwing for 444 yards and three touchdowns on 31 of 40 passes, achieving the third-highest passing yardage in school history. Edge added two rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner with 36 seconds left. Head coach Damon Wilson highlighted the win against a Top 25 team that reached last year's semifinals as a significant achievement for the 3-1 Bears.

Jackson State Extends Unbeaten Run

Jackson State continued its winning streak, defeating Alabama A&M at the Gulf Coast Challenge. Coach T.C. Taylor's team secured the victory, demonstrating the sustained belief and performance that has characterized their season.

Offensive Explosions Define Week 5

Beyond the upsets, Week 5 showcased several high-scoring contests. In one such game, Frye spearheaded the Tigers' homecoming comeback in a 63-59 shootout against Alcorn State. Frye completed 11 of 17 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, adding 61 rushing yards and two scores. Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns, but a late fumble proved costly in the loss. Damien Jones caught four passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Jamarr Ebron had three catches for 121 yards and two scores for Alcorn State.

Outlook for Key Teams' Championship Hopes

Prairie View A&M, now holding a 2-4 overall record and 2-1 in the SWAC, faces upcoming games against the Southern Jaguars on October 10 and Alcorn State on October 17. The team's defensive consistency and second-half offensive output will prove critical for their division championship aspirations. Morgan State, with its 3-1 record, will play Robert Morris in Week 6 before traveling to meet Tennessee State in Week 7, with conference play against Howard beginning on October 24.
