Meta Platforms has introduced a new generative AI model, Muse Spark, and the tool is asking users to upload personal health information for analysis, according to the company’s product rollout this week. The feature is available through the Meta AI app and is planned for integration across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Meta AI presents the health-data option as a way to generate personalized insights. The company says the system can calculate trends, identify patterns, and create visualizations using information drawn from sources such as fitness trackers, glucose monitors, and lab reports.
Medical experts have raised privacy concerns about sharing sensitive health details with consumer AI tools. They note that, unlike healthcare providers, these AI services are not compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the U.S. law designed to protect sensitive patient information.
Meta’s generative AI privacy policy outlines that data shared with Meta AI may be stored and used to train future AI models. They also suggest using such tools to organize thoughts and prepare questions for a physician, rather than relying on a non-HIPAA-compliant system to interpret personal medical data.
